Hussain Adel Badir, is a 31 years old Palestinian farmer, with a family of seven members, who owns four dunums (1 acre) of land in Beit Duqqu. According to Hussein, land and olive trees are critical resources for Palestinian farmers because they provide a critical source of income, food, and cultural heritage. Agriculture is an important sector in Palestine, employing and feeding a large portion of the population. The foundation of Palestinian agriculture is land and olive trees, with olive trees being the most widely cultivated crop in the country. Hussein received 50 olive seedlings from the Olive Tree Campaign this season to help protect his land.
Beit Duqqu is a village in the Jerusalem governorate, located about 9 kilometers northwest of the city of Jerusalem. It shares borders with Beit Anan, Al-Tira (Ramallah Governorate), Beit Ijza, Al-Jib, and Al-Qubeiba. According to the 2007 census, the village had a population of 1461 people, with 308 households and 370 housing units. Beit Duqqu covers approximately 5,512 dunums (1362 acres) of land, with 3606 dunums (891 acres) being arable and 206 dunums (51 acres) being residential. The agricultural sector faces several challenges, including a lack of capital, economic feasibility, high fodder and livestock prices, and limited water sources. Following the 1995 accords, 10.6% of the village land was classified as Area B, while 89.4 % was classified as Area C. Unfortunately, Israel has taken land from Beit Duqqu to build the Israeli colony (settlement) of 'Giv'at Ze'ev'.
