Saleem Ahmad Al-Hih is a 45 years-old Palestinian farmer, who has 5 family members, and owns a land of 5 dunums (5 = 5000 m2) in Surif. The Israeli apartheid wall was constructed 400 meters close to his land. Saleem considers the land as one of his sons, and taking care of it and maintaining it is a great duty and requires a lot of work and effort, and the olive tree is history, past and present. He was supported through the Olive Tree Campaign with 70 olive trees to keep hope alive.
Surif is a village located to the north-west of the city of Hebron. Most of the town's 15,000 dunams (3,750 acres) of land is used for agriculture, in particular, olives, wheat and barley. Israel has confiscated approximately 1,213 dunams (305 acres) of land from Surif since 2000, and approximately 1,300 dunums (325 acres) of Surif lands lay behind the Israeli apartheid wall. As a direct result of the wall, the Israeli forces have destroyed approximately 556 olive trees, as well as 123 grape vines, 37 almond trees and 112 others. The village is surrounded to the south by the Israeli colony (settlement) of 'Kfar Etzoin'. After 1987, the occupation established the settlement of 'Beit Ayin' northeast of the village. In addition to colonies (settlements), the village is subjected to one permanent checkpoint, three flying checkpoints, two roadblocks, and three iron gates. According to the 2007 Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) Census, the total population of Surif in 2007 was approximately 13,365 residents.
