Fawzat Fawzi Dakrouk, is a 59 years old Palestinian farmer, who has 9 family membersm and owns 5 dunums (2.25 acres) of land in Salfit. For Palestinians, the olive tree has tremendous cultural, historical, and symbolic significance. The tree is firmly woven into Palestinian cultural identity and is frequently considered as a symbol of peace, resilience, and endurance. It depicts the rich heritage of Palestinian agriculture and serves as a reminder of the Palestinian people's deep origins and connection to their land. Furthermore, as Fawzat stated, olive trees have been a significant source of income for many Palestinian families for centuries, making the tree a vital symbol of economic sustainability. However, he also mentioned that he is facing some lack of water resources. The Olive Tree Campaign supported Fawzat with 100 olive trees to help him stay in his land and keep hope alive.
Salfit is a vital Palestinian city in the West Bank, famous for its political and agricultural significance. Its population of around 10,911 people reside in an area of 23,062 square kilometers, and the city's agricultural production is a major contributor to Palestine's economy. The city's land is mostly used for olive farming, with 90% of its arable land planted with olive trees, producing 12% of Palestine's total olive oil production. However, Israeli settlements built partially or wholly on Salfit's land have created numerous challenges, reducing available farming areas, releasing wild boars that damage crops, and causing sewage water to flow into Salfit. Additionally, the high cost of fodder has led to a decline in livestock, impacting the city's agricultural sector and livelihood.
