Shakir Mohammad Zubaidiyya, is a 74 years old Palestinian farmer, who owns 13 dunums (3.25 acres) of property in Salfit, and has two family members. Shaker needs a permission from the Israeli authorities to get to his land, which takes a long time. Olive trees, according to Shaker, have a unique place in the hearts of all Palestinians. Olive trees are not only an economic lifeline, but also a sign of endurance and political resistance, as one of the richest and most beautiful living emblems of Palestinian identity and cultural history.
Salfit is a vital Palestinian city in the West Bank, famous for its political and agricultural significance. Its population of around 10,911 people reside in an area of 23,062 square kilometers, and the city's agricultural production is a major contributor to Palestine's economy. The city's land is mostly used for olive farming, with 90% of its arable land planted with olive trees, producing 12% of Palestine's total olive oil production. However, Israeli settlements built partially or wholly on Salfit's land have created numerous challenges, reducing available farming areas, releasing wild boars that damage crops, and causing sewage water to flow into Salfit. Additionally, the high cost of fodder has led to a decline in livestock, impacting the city's agricultural sector and livelihood.
